Week 13 ECOT Simulation Reflection

Please reflect on your experience in the ECOT Simulation.  Please don't confuse this with the ECOT Simulation survey.  The survey also needs to be completed. The survey is located at this link.

  1. Personally I did not like taking part in the ECOt simulation. Since I am an Early Childhood Major I sat in on the Kindergarten one and I think that the things they were learning during this online lesson would be better in a face to face environment. I think that students at this young of an age need guidance from their teachers as well as interaction with their peers. I also think that this type of technology would be hard for kindergarteners to learn because even I- as a college student had difficulty logging in and writing using the mouse pad. I believe it is still important for young kids to be using paper and pencils instead of being glued to the computer. Overall I would say that I have no interest in being an online teacher for my students but I do think that in the high school and college setting online lessons can be beneficial.

  2. My experience with the ECOT simulation went better than expected. I participated in Hannah Brown's high school art class, and I thought it to be a pleasant experience and I did learn something new about perspective in drawing! While I do believe learning in a classroom environment is more beneficial to students, I thought that this online classroom is a good alternative and does provide its own advantages to students who do not want to participate in a face-to-face environment. There was also probably more class participation in this online art class than may be in a face-to-face class. I think an online class, although not as beneficial as a face-to-face class, can be a good thing and beneficial to students as long as all its resources are used as well as they can be.

  3. I thought that doing the ECOT simulation was interesting. I am an Early Childhood major, but I unfortunately couldn’t make it to the kindergarten simulation so I was in the high school art class. I thought that for high school it was very good especially since I know in high school I never wanted to sit in my hour long classes. Having these shortened classes gives you more time to work on your homework, which is good for students that are working jobs or have other things going on. Based off of this though I don’t believe that this would be good for younger grades. Kids need socialization and guidance from their teacher and that would be very difficult to do over a computer. Overall I don’t believe that I will be teaching in an online classroom.

  4. I participated in the Thursday session of the ECOT simulation with Wendy Garbrandt for 8th grade Social Studies. At first I was confused on how this was going to work because the non-face to face thing was weird to me because I have never done something like that where it is just audio. I thought the drawing and answer questions was pretty cool, but for younger children i think that could get pretty complicated on how to use especially 1st-5th grade because I needed it explained a couple times before continuing on. I did not like it honestly. I felt like there was no real purpose to it. I think it is too easy for the children to wonder off or play games on their computer while the teacher is talking. Plus you can just look up the homework answers right there on the internet while she/ he is doing a lesson. I didn't feel connected with my teacher or peers in anyway and I don’t get how you would get the community feel in the classroom this way. Face to face is defiantly more beneficial and worth the time than the online class just because you would be able to have one on one help/extra help from the teacher if you are stuck. So many people were saying things in that chat to my teacher that my question got skipped over and I was behind for a couple minutes when she went to go turn on a video for us. I think it is a cool idea, but still needs room for improvement.

  5. I was apart of the Thursday session of 8th grade social studies with Wendy Garbrandt. I found it to have both pros and cons. I thought the set-up of her lesson and classroom was clear and organized. She was a good teacher and provided a lot of information through the different slides she had created. However, it is so hard for her to manage the classroom and keep everyone alert and participating. There is no control over a student to make him pay attention for the most part. It was kind of hard to get acclimated to how to work the system and for 8th graders, i doubt most could understand how to use it and be disciplined enough to always pay attention. Kids need to learn social skills in a face to face environment, so i am not a real believer in ECOT as of now.

  6. The ECOT simulation that I sat in on was the 8th grade social studies class. Although I do think there is a place for complete online learning, I think this held strong to my original opinion that usually older students can handle it better. The instructor, Wendy Garbrandt, was usually a co-teacher of the class, and she had moments that you could tell she wasn't used to running a classroom alone. Although it is completely reasonable, I could see middle schoolers taking advantage of this. She also talked about how it could be difficult to keep the 8th graders from watching TV or playing video games in the background; having them lose focus on the subject. I know as a student this is something I could see myself doing, even if it was a class I actually signed up for; so many students try to multitask and end up hurting themselves in the long run. I'd say as of now my opinion is pretty set that older students would fare better in this setting, especially college students who actually picked to be in said class.

  7. ECOT is an online learning alternative paid for by the state of Ohio. It allows students who did not succeed to their full potential in traditional school to have the opportunity to still be on the same playing field as their peers. This past week I was able to participate in an ECOT simulation where I was the online student and I had a teacher who controlled every move I made. I was not allowed to do anything until she gave me the “privilege.” This was the weirdest part for me because when we do online sessions with the 2030 class we have complete freedom to chat and share with the class as we please. The fact that I couldn't see my peers or the teacher and the fact that they couldn't see me made it very easy for me to lose focus on the teacher and the class altogether. I am not a fan of ECOT because while I was “in class” I was also watching tv, surfing the web, and doing basically whatever I felt like doing. As a matter of fact I probably could have gotten away with leaving the room and simply having the classroom screen open on my laptop for the entire simulation. At the end of the day the entire program comes off as very half-baked because how do we keep track of kids we have no contact with? It is a poor excuse for education and allows socially awkward people to sit at home all day, and kids who had teachers that refused to put up with them to be set off to the side and given an easy way out rather than developing them as a person.

  8. I actually really enjoyed the ECOT simulation. It helped to give me more insight to what a virtual classroom is really like. I was originally concerned that students would not gain as much knowledge from this type of classroom setting. Although I believe this still holds true in some aspects, I can now see the benefits from learning in an online classroom. The instructor who was guiding the class was very kind and welcoming. If I were a younger student I would respond very well to her teaching style. The teacher told us that when a student does well in class she sends them glow in the dark beads to their house, they really like this and it helps them to feel a since of community within the classroom. If I were a student in the ECOT school I would most likely feel comfortable participating in this type of classroom setting. I believe that students are able to gain a lot of knowledge from this type of learning. Although I would probably not be an ECOT teacher seeing as I am special education, I am now able to appreciate it a little more.
